Elbow makes a few distinctions between the writer and the academic. However, I believe, that one of the most important things that Elbow says about his students and their writing is that it's important that writing be viewed and taught as a way to sort out your emotions. Elbow wants his students to be heard and be confident with their thoughts and their ideas.
